Are Spiritual Dreams Real? My Experience With Brazilian Kimbanda

What Are Dreams and Why Have They Fascinated Humanity?

Have you ever woken up from a dream that felt so real you could not stop thinking about it? If so, you are not alone. Every night, millions of people dream. While many dreams disappear within minutes after waking, others remain vivid for years. From a scientific perspective, dreams are mental experiences created while the brain processes memories, emotions, and imagination during sleep.

However, throughout history, many cultures have believed that dreams can reveal much more than ordinary thoughts. For example, people in Classical Antiquity often viewed dreams as messages from the divine. Ancient Egyptians carefully recorded meaningful dreams, while the ancient Greeks visited sacred temples hoping to receive guidance through sleep. As a result, dreams became symbols of wisdom, prophecy, and spiritual insight long before psychology existed.

Spiritual Dreams in Brazilian Kimbanda

Today, dreams continue to play an important role in many religious traditions. Likewise, Afro-Brazilian religions such as Brazilian Kimbanda consider dreams an important part of spiritual development.

However, experienced practitioners do not believe that every dream is a supernatural message. Instead, they encourage patience, observation, and discernment. Within Kimbanda, dreams are often described as humanity’s first oracle because every person dreams long before learning any formal system of divination.

Consequently, dreams may become opportunities for personal reflection, spiritual growth, and, in some situations, communication with ancestors or spiritual entities. Even so, important dreams should never be interpreted impulsively. Rather, practitioners are encouraged to seek confirmation through experience, ritual practice, or traditional oracles before reaching conclusions.

Carl Jung’s Perspective on Dreams

Similarly, psychologist Carl Gustav Jung believed that dreams deserved careful attention, although his explanation differed from religious traditions. According to Jung, dreams express messages from the unconscious mind through universal symbols known as archetypes.

Furthermore, he argued that these symbols appear repeatedly across different cultures because they represent shared aspects of human experience. Although Jung acknowledged that some dreams could feel deeply spiritual, he generally interpreted them as psychological experiences instead of objective evidence of supernatural communication.

Today, many therapists, researchers, and spiritual seekers continue to study Jung’s ideas because they offer valuable insights into the symbolic nature of dreams.

Why I Always Write Down My Dreams

In my opinion, dreams deserve far more attention than most people give them. For that reason, I always recommend keeping a notebook and a pen beside the bed.

As soon as you wake up, write down everything you remember before the details begin to fade. Personally, I have noticed that dreams often lose important details within just a few minutes. Therefore, recording them immediately becomes an essential habit for anyone interested in spirituality or self-knowledge.

At the same time, I also believe people should be extremely careful when interpreting dreams. Not every vivid dream carries spiritual meaning. Sometimes, the unconscious mind simply reflects everyday worries, conversations, fears, or emotions. Because of this, patience is just as important as intuition. Above all, discernment should always come before certainty.

My First Spiritual Dream With Pombagira

For me, one experience completely changed the way I understood spiritual dreams.

At the beginning of my journey with Exú and Pombagira, I wanted to establish a respectful connection with the Pombagira who, according to my religious tradition, accompanied my spiritual path. Therefore, for four consecutive nights, I visited a crossroads after dark.

During each visit, I respectfully offered a glass of alcoholic beverage and a cigarette while praying for guidance and spiritual closeness. At first, nothing unusual happened. However, everything changed after the fourth visit.

That same night, I experienced one of the most extraordinary dreams of my life. A feminine spiritual presence approached me peacefully and introduced herself by name. Unlike my ordinary dreams, this experience remained remarkably clear after I woke up.

I could still remember the conversation, the emotions, and the powerful feeling that I had experienced something completely different. A few days later, I consulted an oracle within Brazilian Kimbanda. To my surprise, the same name revealed during my dream was confirmed during the consultation.

How That Dream Changed My Spiritual Journey

From that day forward, I never looked at dreams the same way again.

First, the experience strengthened my personal belief that the spiritual world is alive and capable of communicating in unexpected ways. More importantly, it showed me how valuable dream mediumship can become during the spiritual development of a Kimbanda practitioner.

I do not claim that every practitioner will experience the same thing. Likewise, I do not believe that every dream is a spiritual message. Nevertheless, that single dream transformed my understanding of spirituality forever.

Since then, I have approached dreams with far greater respect, curiosity, and discernment than ever before.

How I Learned to Distinguish Spiritual Dreams

After that first experience, my perspective changed completely. However, I did not begin believing that every dream carried a spiritual message. Instead, I became much more observant and much more patient.

From that moment on, I developed a simple habit that continues to this day. Every morning, I write down my dreams before getting out of bed. At first, this practice seemed unnecessary. Nevertheless, I quickly realized how easily important details disappear within just a few minutes after waking.

As time passed, I filled several notebooks with dreams. Most of them had no apparent spiritual meaning. In fact, many simply reflected conversations, worries, work, family, or ordinary daily experiences. Because of this, I learned that not every vivid dream deserves a supernatural interpretation.

On the other hand, a small number of dreams stood out immediately. They felt different. Their emotions were stronger, their symbols remained clear, and their memories stayed with me for weeks or even months. Consequently, I began paying closer attention to those experiences while avoiding hasty conclusions.

Dreams That Were Later Confirmed

As my spiritual journey continued, I experienced other dreams that eventually proved meaningful.

For example, on two different occasions, I dreamed about negative spiritual influences directed toward me. At first, I refused to draw immediate conclusions because I remembered the lessons I had learned in Brazilian Kimbanda. Instead, I waited patiently and continued my normal religious practice.

A short time later, I consulted an oracle. To my surprise, both situations were confirmed during those consultations.

Naturally, experiences like these strengthened my confidence in my own spiritual path. Nevertheless, they also reinforced something equally important: confirmation matters.

In my opinion, dreams should never become the only basis for important spiritual decisions. Rather, they should encourage reflection and, whenever possible, be compared with other forms of spiritual guidance.

Because of that approach, I have avoided many mistakes that could easily have resulted from emotional or impulsive interpretations.

Why Discernment Matters More Than Extraordinary Experiences

One lesson has become increasingly clear throughout my journey.

People often become fascinated by extraordinary stories. However, genuine spiritual growth rarely depends on dramatic experiences. Instead, it depends on patience, humility, and consistency.

Today, I am much less interested in asking whether every dream is supernatural. Instead, I ask a different question:

“What can this dream teach me?”

Sometimes the answer is spiritual.

Sometimes it is psychological.

Sometimes it is simply a reflection of everyday life.

In every situation, however, I believe careful observation produces far better results than immediate certainty.

For that reason, I never encourage people to fear their dreams or become obsessed with finding hidden messages everywhere. In my opinion, both extremes create unnecessary confusion.

Instead, I believe dreams become valuable when they encourage self-knowledge, emotional balance, and spiritual maturity.

My Personal View on Spiritual Dreams

After years of practicing Brazilian Kimbanda, I have reached a conclusion that combines both faith and common sense.

I respect psychology because it explains how dreams are connected to memory, emotions, and the unconscious mind. At the same time, I also respect the spiritual teachings that have guided my own journey.

Therefore, I no longer see psychology and spirituality as opposing ideas.

Instead, I believe they answer different questions.

Psychology helps explain how dreams happen.

Spirituality helps me reflect on why certain dreams leave such a profound impact on my life.

Because of my own experiences, I believe some spiritual dreams can become meaningful moments within sincere religious practice. Nevertheless, I also believe humility is essential.

Extraordinary experiences should never replace critical thinking.

Likewise, skepticism should never prevent us from reflecting on experiences that genuinely transform our lives.

For me, true wisdom exists somewhere between those two extremes.

Final Thoughts

So, are spiritual dreams real?

Personally, I believe the answer depends on each person’s worldview.

Some readers will naturally prefer scientific explanations. Others will identify more strongly with religious traditions. Both perspectives deserve respect.

My own experiences have taught me that dreams can become valuable tools for spiritual growth when they are approached with patience, discernment, and humility.

Above all, I have learned that the greatest value of dreams is not predicting the future.

Instead, their greatest value lies in helping us better understand ourselves, our beliefs, and the spiritual path we choose to follow.
